Usually American in make, once they served their intended purpose, they got hot rodded. In the pre-war era this meant getting 'souped up' for straight-line acceleration and maximum miles-per-hour. Hot rods were the first cars built for drag strips in America and for top-end speed at dry lake beds. Since speed was the goal, most hot rods are built out of the lightest production cars that are available. The '55 Chevy was an early favorite, but hot rodders have applied their speed art to virtaully all makes and models since they almost always pulled the original engines anyway. They changed the look, which took on more functionality for the sake of speed. Finally, as technology blossomed, the hot rod just got more and more high tech, and consequently faster. As long as straight-line speedways stay in vogue, the hot rod will always be a classic!
